About Outage Power Planner
A free, independent tool for people in the United States who want to plan battery backup for power outages – without guesswork or sales pitches.
What we do
Storms, heat waves and grid emergencies can leave homes without power for hours or days. Portable power stations are a popular, quiet and fume-free way to keep essentials like a refrigerator, Wi-Fi and phones running. Our calculator helps you estimate whether a station can handle the devices you care about and for roughly how long.
Our principles
- Transparent math. Every formula is published on the methodologypage and covered by automated tests.
- Honest data labels. The current appliance values and station presets are illustrative estimates. We never present them as measurements or manufacturer specs. When we add real measurements in the future, they will be labeled with how and when they were taken.
- Safety over convenience. We do not recommend connecting generators or power stations to home wiring except through a properly installed transfer switch or interlock done by a licensed electrician.
- Privacy by default. The calculator runs in your browser. We do not ask for an account or store what you enter. See our Privacy Policy.
Independence
We are not affiliated with any power station, generator or utility company. This site may show advertising in the future to cover its costs; ads will be clearly separated from content and will not influence our calculations or explanations.
Not professional advice
The information here is for general planning only. It is not electrical, engineering or medical advice. For work on your home’s electrical system, hire a licensed electrician.
